fix(zed): relay OpenAI tool calls instead of ending on the first sentence - #7599
Turns that use a Zed [OI] model (zed/gpt-*) ended after the first sentence. The model did emit function and custom tool calls, but OpenCodex parsed the stream with the compaction-only Responses parser, which keeps message text and drops calls. Codex stored that sentence as the final answer and finished the turn. A follow-up that still carried Codex's private additional_tools input item was then rejected by Zed with HTTP 400 (unknown variant additional_tools).
This relays those calls back to Codex so the turn can continue.
Request side. Tools declared for the current turn are lifted out of additional_tools into the public tools array Zed accepts; wrappers from replayed history are removed and are not promoted. web_search is still filtered by the existing Zed rule. The promotion now runs on a detached copy of the raw body before the Responses delegate builds, because that delegate repairs its input: on an unexpanded replay it drops replayed reasoning items, which slid the current-turn wrapper below the original replay-prefix length and hid its tools. The caller's parsed body is never mutated, and the post-build lift is a no-op.
Stream side. Adapter tool deltas are unkeyed, so only one call can be emitted at a time. Starting a second call used to end the first permanently: later deltas for the first were discarded and even its .done arguments could not repair it, so the client received truncated JSON. Now the oldest open call stays active and every later call keeps its deltas until that call's own terminal event, then replays in order. This covers both function-call arguments and custom-tool input. EOF and response.incomplete flush arguments that already arrived and do not copy a full arguments field that no done or completed item confirmed. A completed compaction item keeps its ciphertext on the done event with the same retained-budget lease the old parser transferred, and that lease is released if the terminal event is never yielded.
Everything this translator retains for the life of a turn is charged to TranslatorBudget: per-call argument bytes, the optional full arguments string, and the per-item and unscoped text kept to suppress a completed replay. Closing a call releases its bytes, and a finally block releases whatever remains when a consumer cancels or a read throws.
A completed replay is also deduped per message item, and an incomplete response keeps usage that the adapter event already forwarded.
This replaces #7594, which targeted main and was closed. The same fix is rebased onto current dev. That branch is not rewritten.
This head is the reviewed head b7f89fbc plus merges of dev (the latest includes #7453 and #7536, and the 2.94.0 version line). The only conflicts were additive registrations in scripts/test-layout/layout-adapters.json and tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json; both sides' entries are kept. No PR source changed. 2,287 passed, 12 failed
All five Zed suites, the layout guards, tests/advisor and tests/images passed. The 12 failures are in tests/web-search and tests/adapters/openai, which share code this PR changes (src/bridge/sse.ts, src/web-search/loop.ts, src/adapters/openai-responses/*):
Ten fail the same way on unmodified dev2b5148b12 when the same failing files run together (web-search-sidecar-replay, web-search-timeout-plan, web-search.test.ts; 11 failed there, including the migration-matrix import test that passed in this run).
web-search-rotation-usage-attribution and openai-provider-option-e2e fail only inside the 104-file single process. Run on their own on this PR's code, both pass (2 passed, 0 failed), so this is cross-file state in one test process.
Full-suite scope exception: the full bun run test was not run locally. The shared host was under a coordinator-imposed resource limit (one focused test process per lane). This PR changes tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, so PR CI selects the four full Ubuntu shards, which run these files in their normal sharded setup.
Earlier verification
bun test tests/providers/zed-hosted-provider.test.ts tests/providers/zed-retained-budget.test.ts: 58 pass, 0 fail.
New relay cases: interleaved function calls (the maintainer's trace, call_a={"x":1} and call_b={"y":2}), interleaved custom-tool input, an incomplete response that does not invent arguments from a later full item, an EOF flush of received-only arguments, and an unexpanded replay whose repaired input still promotes the current-turn tool.
New budget cases: a consumer that stops while two calls are open releases both calls and every retained byte; ciphertext reaches done and releases through its lease; failure, incomplete and consumer cancellation each return retained bytes to zero; buffered arguments and text return to zero with no open calls at end of stream; accumulated text trips translation_buffer_limit; a completed item replay does not re-charge a closed call.
Reverting only src/adapters/zed.ts and src/adapters/zed-openai-stream.ts to the previous commit turns all five relay regressions and the retained-ciphertext test red; restoring them makes the same run green.
bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check and bun run privacy:scan pass.
structure/providers-and-adapters.md states the Zed translation contract this diff owns, including that end of stream and response.incomplete are the flush points.
The full suite is left to CI; nothing outside the Zed [OI] path changed.

…ence
Zed's OpenAI delegate was parsed by the compaction-only Responses parser, which kept message text and dropped function and custom calls. Codex then stored that sentence as the final answer. Promote the current turn's additional_tools catalog into public tools so a follow-up is not rejected as an unknown input variant.
A completed replay was compared with every message concatenated, so an earlier message was appended again. Incomplete responses also dropped usage that the adapter event already forwards.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The Zed adapter now promotes eligible current-turn additional_tools and translates OpenAI response streams into adapter events. Shared adapter paths preserve explicitly incomplete tool-call status, which affects tool completion and search, image, and advisor continuation.

Summary
Argument tokenization and reconciliation src/adapters/zed-json-tokens.ts, src/adapters/zed-tool-arguments.ts, tests/providers/zed-argument-consistency.test.ts, tests/providers/zed-lossless-arguments.test.ts
A resumable JSON scanner and argument reconciliation helpers validate streamed fragments against authoritative arguments. Tests cover lexical differences, incremental input, conflicts, and nesting limits.
The request path copies OpenAI request data, promotes eligible current-turn tools, and routes OpenAI streams through the translator. The translator emits ordered text, reasoning, tool, usage, error, and incomplete events. Tests cover argument and text reconciliation, failure handling, budget release, and ciphertext leases.
The tool_call_end event accepts an incomplete marker. Bridges and encoders preserve that state, and tool guards and loops do not treat incomplete calls as completed calls. Tests cover required-tool, advisor, image, and web-search behavior.
lidge-jun/opencodex#7594: Implements the same Zed tool promotion and OpenAI stream translation with a smaller scope.
lidge-jun/opencodex#7463: Changes the required-tool guard so an incomplete tool-call end does not fulfill a required call.
lidge-jun/opencodex#7637: Changes shared additional_tools normalization to promote current-turn wrappers and remove replayed wrappers.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 11812
The Zed relay change itself looks sound, but some edge paths still misbehave. A forced web-search answer cut off by max tokens can return a 502. Direct Chat and Messages clients may see an incomplete tool call as an executable one. Successful Zed turns lose opaque usage metadata. These should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Explanation
The title "fix(zed): relay OpenAI tool calls instead of ending on the first sentence" matches the main change. The raw summary adds translateZedOpenAiStream to relay Zed OpenAI Responses SSE, including ordered function and custom tool-call relay and handling of additional_tools promotion. The PR objectives state the same goal: letting Zed gpt turns continue after tool calls, where the old parser dropped tool calls. The title is specific and uses a conventional commit style. It is short, clear, and avoids file lists or vague terms. The wording "ending on the first sentence" is slightly unclear, since it refers to the old parser behavior, but the title still reflects the primary change.

Blocking correctness issue at src/adapters/zed-openai-stream.ts:136-174 (closeOpenCallsExcept / startIfNeeded / appendArgs), reviewed at 9c5e22ace281ad55c7e6d15dfa63e1e317b7056e.
Starting a second streamed tool call permanently marks the first call ended. If deltas for the first call arrive after the second starts, appendArgs discards them; finishCall also returns early, so even the complete arguments in the .done/completed item cannot repair it. The downstream client receives truncated JSON and may execute an invalid/incomplete tool call.
I reproduced this directly through translateZedOpenAiStream with synthetic SSE and a real translator budget, without a Zed/provider call:
output_item.added: a (call_a, function a)
function_call_arguments.delta: a -> {"x":
output_item.added: b (call_b, function b)
function_call_arguments.delta: b -> {"y":2}
function_call_arguments.done: b -> {"y":2}
function_call_arguments.delta: a -> 1}
function_call_arguments.done: a -> {"x":1}
Expected reconstructed arguments: call_a={"x":1}, call_b={"y":2}. Actual: call_a={"x":, call_b={"y":2}. The same two calls in sequential order pass. Capped Linux/Bun 1.4.3 probe: 1 pass / 1 fail.
Please keep per-item state alive until that item's actual terminal event. Since the current adapter event vocabulary has one active unkeyed delta stream, buffer/serialize interleaved items without discarding subsequent deltas, or use an established keyed relay owner if one exists. Add this interleaving control (also custom-tool input) beside the sequential/completion-dedup cases and test cancellation/incomplete termination without inventing completed tool arguments. Also update the mapped structure document for the newly owned Zed translation contract; this diff changes no structure/ documentation.
This is a change request for the concrete relay defect, not a claim that the upstream has already emitted this particular trace. No live traffic, credentials or account usage were involved.
Needs fixes before this can land: retain each call until its terminal event; serialize interleaved function/custom calls without dropping deltas; preserve the current-turn boundary through repair; add regressions and update the owned structure document.
Still needed on dev: yes — src/adapters/zed.ts:413 still delegates to the existing parser; src/adapters/openai-responses/passthrough.ts:663 emits extracted text. The proposed relay is absent.
Exact-head CI at triage time: 9c5e22a — enforce-target cancelled; Cross-platform CI, Catalog async contracts and React Doctor are action_required. lane=all on exact head: n.a.
Please refresh onto current dev when addressing these; heads older than dev need a fresh exact-head CI run before review.
Adapter tool deltas are unkeyed, so starting a second streamed call ended the
first one and dropped every later delta plus its full arguments. That handed
Codex truncated JSON. Only the oldest open call is emitted now; newer calls stay
buffered and replay in order after the older call's own terminal event. EOF and
response.incomplete flush arguments that arrived, without inventing a tail from
a full field that no done item confirmed.
Zed configurations with statelessResponses or paired tool results run Responses
repair on the delegate body, which can drop a replayed reasoning item and slide
the current-turn additional_tools wrapper under the original prefix length.
Promote those wrappers on a detached copy of the raw body before the delegate
builds, so the caller's request stays untouched and the post-build lift is a
no-op.
The [OI] Zed stream also lost the compaction ciphertext the old parser carried.
Keep it on the done event with the same retained lease, and release it when the
terminal event is never yielded.
Addressed both open findings in e2f87f6a2, and the PR is rebased onto current dev (bd5c2ea90).
Interleaved calls. Adapter tool deltas are unkeyed, so the translator now keeps one active call and buffers every later one. A call keeps all of its deltas until its own .done or completed item; then its start, full accumulated arguments and end are emitted in arrival order. closeOpenCallsExcept is gone — nothing ends a call except that call's own terminal event or a flush. Both function-call arguments and custom-tool input are covered. response.incomplete and EOF flush only what arrived; they no longer copy a full arguments field that no done or completed item confirmed.
Tests beside the existing relay cases:
your exact trace, asserting call_a={"x":1} and call_b={"y":2};
the same interleaving for custom-tool input;
response.incomplete with a later full item in output, which emits only the streamed prefix;
EOF after a delta, which flushes received arguments only.
Replay boundary. Current-turn additional_tools wrappers are promoted on a detached copy of _rawBody before the delegate builds, so a repair that drops a replayed reasoning item can no longer hide the wrapper under _replayPrefixLen. The caller's raw body is untouched and the post-build lift is idempotent. Regression covers an unexpanded replay with statelessResponses: true.
Structure doc.structure/providers-and-adapters.md now states this translation contract on the Zed row; bun run structure:check passes.
Also fixed here. The [OI] Zed stream had dropped the compaction ciphertext the old parser carried, which is why test 3/4 failed on zed-retained-budget. It is back on done with the same retained lease, released if that event is never yielded.
Local validation: bun test tests/providers/zed-hosted-provider.test.ts tests/providers/zed-retained-budget.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/structure-ssot.test.ts → 101 pass, 0 fail; bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check and bun run privacy:scan pass. The full suite is left to CI on this exact head.

Tool arguments, the optional full arguments field, and the text kept to suppress
a completed replay grew outside TranslatorBudget. A long or interleaved turn
could hold far more than the per-turn ceiling. Each call now opens a budget call
when it is first seen, every growth is charged, and closing the call releases
exactly what it still holds. Text is charged per item and per unscoped stream,
with superseded bytes released on every replacement. A finally block releases
the remaining calls, text and ciphertext when the consumer cancels or a read
throws.
The structure row said cancellation flushes buffered arguments. The code flushes
on end of stream and response.incomplete only, so the contract now says that.
Follow-up in 585f5cde3: CodeRabbit's next pass found that this translator kept tool arguments and replay-dedupe text outside TranslatorBudget. That is now charged per call and per text buffer, with everything released on close and in a finally when a consumer cancels or a read throws. The structure row's "cancellation" wording was wrong and now says end of stream.
Local validation on this head: bun test tests/providers/zed-hosted-provider.test.ts tests/providers/zed-retained-budget.test.ts → 57 pass, 0 fail; bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan pass. A consumer that stops mid-turn now has a regression: two calls are open, the
newer one's arguments are still buffered, and cancelling the iterator must
release both calls and every retained byte.
@lidge-jun The four items in your triage note are all addressed on 5ba497ff0, which is rebased onto dev at bd5c2ea90.
Triage item
Where it is done
Retain each call until its terminal event
src/adapters/zed-openai-stream.ts: closeOpenCallsExcept is gone. Only pump ends a call, and only after that call's own .done or completed item.
Serialize interleaved function/custom calls without dropping deltas
Same file: one active call at a time, later calls keep every delta and replay in arrival order. response.incomplete and end of stream flush received arguments only.
Preserve the current-turn boundary through repair
src/adapters/zed.ts: promoteOpenAiToolsBeforeRepair promotes current-turn additional_tools on a detached copy of _rawBody before the Responses delegate repairs input.
Regressions and the owned structure document
Five relay regressions plus budget/cancellation coverage in tests/providers/zed-hosted-provider.test.ts; structure/providers-and-adapters.md states the contract.
On dev-since-triage: the relay is no longer absent — src/adapters/zed.ts sends the [OI] stream to translateZedOpenAiStream instead of the compaction-only passthrough parser.
Also fixed in the same branch: the test 3/4 failure on zed-retained-budget, caused by the compaction ciphertext the old parser carried; and unbudgeted argument and text buffers, which CodeRabbit raised after the first pass.
Local validation on this head: bun test tests/providers/zed-hosted-provider.test.ts tests/providers/zed-retained-budget.test.ts → 58 pass, 0 fail; bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan pass. Reverting only the two adapter files turns the new regressions red.
One thing I cannot do from a fork: Cross-platform CI, Catalog async contracts and React Doctor on this head are action_required with no jobs, because GitHub gates the first fork run. They need a maintainer to approve the run.
Withdrawing my interleaved-tool truncation blocker: at current head 5ba497f, the Zed suites pass 58/0 and my original independent sequential/interleaved regression passes 2/0 on Bun 1.4.4. Calls now wait for their own terminal event. This withdrawal is not technical approval or a CI/readiness waiver.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Re-reviewed 5ba497ff03fd7f26970702547164f2f6f43e31b1. I withdrew my earlier CHANGES_REQUESTED review because its interleaved-call truncation defect is fixed.
Independent validation with official Bun 1.4.4, frozen matching dependencies, private homes and the local cgroup limits:
bun test --isolate tests/providers/zed-hosted-provider.test.ts tests/providers/zed-retained-budget.test.ts: 58 pass, 0 fail, 190 assertions.
My original sequential/interleaved probe from the Oct 23 review, unchanged apart from import paths: 2 pass, 0 fail. The formerly truncated A call now receives {"x":1} while B retains {"y":2}.
I inspected the current four-file diff, including custom-call serialization, received-only EOF/incomplete flushes, current-turn tool promotion before replay repair, compaction lease transfer and cancellation/buffer regressions. The owning structure description now covers this contract.
I approved the existing current-head Cross-platform CI, Catalog async contracts and React Doctor fork runs after inspecting the patch and execution surfaces. That is permission to execute those checks, not a passing result or merge approval. Keep this Draft until branch currency, review threads/readiness and replacement-head CI are satisfied. No live Zed/provider request, full local suite or independent local typecheck pass is claimed in this follow-up.
Release triage for v2.93.0 (maintainer decision): deferred until after the 2.93.0 release. This PR stays open.
Why: the fix adds a new 516-line Zed OpenAI stream relay (src/adapters/zed-openai-stream.ts) that replaces how Zed tool-call streams end. It is still a draft and 61 commits behind dev. Its tests use synthetic streams only; there is no evidence yet against a real Zed hosted stream on current dev. A new protocol parser on a hosted provider is not something we can validate inside the release window.
To pick it back up: rebase onto current dev, complete the readiness checklist, and get green exact-head CI. A redacted capture of a real Zed tool-call stream that the current code truncates would help review a lot.

Maintainer update for the v2.93.0 cycle: this PR is scheduled to land after v2.93.0 is published on main. It is now a post-release item; the earlier deferral comment is superseded. Until the release ships, it stays unmerged.
I pushed b7f89fbc8fb839f88e2d8b6ff48939f169a6a1d6 to this branch. It merges current dev (no rebase) and keeps your commits and credit. Four review rounds found problems in the relay, all fixed:
Failure usage: failure responses now carry only known numeric usage counters, never opaque upstream metadata.
Text before failure: text and reasoning queued behind an open tool call are no longer lost on response.failed or error. Open calls close as incomplete, the received output is replayed, and then the original failure is sent.
Contradictory final arguments: a completed snapshot that contradicts the streamed arguments now fails the turn instead of producing an executable call. This applies to function and custom calls, and to late or buffered deltas.
How arguments are compared: function arguments are compared with a linear, lossless lexical scan. Whitespace is ignored, numbers must match as exact literals, strings compare by decoded characters, key order counts, and there is an explicit nesting limit. Custom input stays byte-exact. Equivalent replays still match.
Validation on Windows with Bun 1.4.4:
985 focused Zed, adapter and bridge tests pass with 0 failures. Typecheck, structure check, privacy scan and docs build pass.
Independent review round 4: PASS with no findings.
The claude-integration failures seen in a broader local run also fail on clean dev.
Remaining before merge: exact-head CI, publication of v2.93.0, and a final recheck against dev. Live Zed validation was not run.
Update the sidecar-loop contract to match the new terminal checks.
Line 600 says src/web-search/loop.ts and src/images/loop.ts check isTerminalRefusalIncomplete before looping. Both loops now stop on any incomplete or error terminal and on a done with a recognized truncated stop reason. The sentence also says every other incomplete keeps the incomplete shape, which no longer describes sidecar loop selection. Update this paragraph with the current predicates and their client-visible effect.
As per coding guidelines, “A doc in this folder states the contract that holds right now, in the present tense, for one subsystem.”

Use a dedicated error type to detect the depth limit.
Line 12 and Line 76 detect the nesting-limit failure with error.message.includes('depth limit'). That text is built in src/adapters/zed-json-tokens.ts Line 113 from a free-form detail string. The two branches decide opposite outcomes.
In zedArgumentFingerprint, a missed match makes over-deep JSON fall back to a raw: UTF-16 hash. It should throw instead.
In reconcileZedArguments, a missed match makes the limit failure return undefined. The translator then reports it as ZedToolArgumentsError ("conflicting arguments"), not the documented clear depth-limit failure.
Any later rewording of that message turns the check off silently. The current tests catch this only through the message text asserted in tests/providers/zed-lossless-arguments.test.ts Lines 87-89.

Treat only a non-null error as a diagnostic. Successful completions currently lose opaque usage.
Line 240 uses Object.hasOwn(event, "error"). Line 241 uses Object.hasOwn(event.response, "error"). Both checks match a key whose value is null. The real OpenAI Responses response object always includes "error": null, in response.created, response.in_progress and response.completed.
The failure path for a successful Zed open_ai turn:
The upstream sends {"type":"response.completed","response":{"error":null,"usage":{...,"vendor":...}}}.
diagnostic becomes true because of the null error key.
scrubRecord(event.response) (Line 247) replaces response.usage with zedDiagnosticUsage(record.usage). That keeps only the numeric counters.
translateZedOpenAiStream → retainUsage(response) (src/adapters/zed-openai-stream.ts Line 673) therefore never sees the unknown keys. usageFromResponsesPayload returns no rawUsage.
Result: subscription metadata and future counters are removed on every successful turn. This breaks the openai/codex#41980 parity that src/adapters/openai-responses/usage.ts Lines 10-12 preserves. The stream also scrubs top-level string fields of the successful response, such as echoed instructions, as if they were error text.
Translator Line 583 in src/adapters/zed-openai-stream.ts already uses the correct test: payload.error !== undefined && payload.error !== null. The test success preserves every known counter and opaque success usage through both bridges (tests/providers/zed-argument-consistency.test.ts Lines 282-293) passes only because its fixture omits the error key.
Add a regression next to the existing success-usage test. Send { type: "response.completed", response: { output: [], error: null, usage } }. Assert that done.usage.rawUsage still contains vendor.

Do not present an incomplete call as a completed client tool request.
When tool_call_end.incomplete reaches this branch, failCurrentToolCall() still invokes writer.toolDone. The Chat writer emits the call as a tool_calls chunk without reading its status. The Messages writer has already opened a tool_use block and closes that block without reading its status. A direct client can therefore receive and execute arguments that the adapter marked unfinished. Preserve the incomplete boundary on both client wires. If those wires cannot represent that status, do not deliver the call as an executable tool request. Add direct-encoder regressions for an incomplete end followed by an incomplete terminal and by done. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per coding guidelines, “Preserve existing public exports and configuration compatibility unless the task explicitly changes them”; the direct-client tool-call contract needs an explicit decision before this new marker is projected onto those wires.

Keep an explicitly incomplete end distinct from a malformed call.
When a forced-answer pass contains tool_call_end.incomplete and a final done with stopReason: "max_tokens", this branch sets hasMalformedToolCall. The forced-answer truncation check at Lines 1084–1090 then refuses to forward the terminal. Lines 1092–1114 instead throw a 502, so the client loses the upstream incomplete outcome. Track explicitly incomplete ends separately from structurally malformed calls. Block search execution for either condition, but let a truncated terminal retain its existing forwarding path. max_tokens is a recognized truncated stop reason. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Maintainer integration into dev (MAINTAINERS.md, "Review and merge policy": a maintainer with admin access may integrate a PR into dev without another maintainer approval). This is maintainer integration, not an approving review.
Exact head:11812eebfb7b649e8ea6ad4c694e897477e485b8. It is the reviewed head b7f89fbc plus merges of dev; the only conflicts were additive layout registrations. The dev merges changed no PR source.
Review: four maintainer-lane review rounds on this PR fixed eight findings (usage metadata leakage, contradictory arguments, queued output loss, authoritative-input validation, semantic JSON comparison, numeric precision, quadratic late-fragment work, deep JSON handling). Round 4 passed on the relay implementation now at b7f89fbc. All five review threads are resolved.
Exact-head CI: Cross-platform CI run 40554133282 passed gates, test 1/4 through test 4/4, docker smoke, npm-global ubuntu-latest, docs site build, structure gate, storage policy, api usage and ci. Catalog async contracts run 40554133299 passed. macOS and Windows jobs are skipped on pull requests by policy.
Combined with current dev:devf4a3312ff is ahead of this head with no conflict; it also changes src/adapters/openai-responses/passthrough.ts, request-transport.ts and request-prepare.ts. On the local merge of this head with that dev, typecheck passed, and the layout guards, all Zed suites and tests/adapters/openai passed (1,406 passed, 0 failed across 50 files).
Gate status: the target/description gate enforce-target has not started for this head because the shared Actions queue is backed up (more than 170 queued runs). It passed on the previous head b7f89fbc, and the base and description have not changed since, apart from the added verification section. The dev ruleset has no required status checks.

Summary
Turns that use a Zed [OI] model (
zed/gpt-*) ended after the first sentence. The model did emit function and custom tool calls, but OpenCodex parsed the stream with the compaction-only Responses parser, which keeps message text and drops calls. Codex stored that sentence as the final answer and finished the turn. A follow-up that still carried Codex's privateadditional_toolsinput item was then rejected by Zed with HTTP 400 (unknown variant additional_tools).This relays those calls back to Codex so the turn can continue.
Request side. Tools declared for the current turn are lifted out of
additional_toolsinto the publictoolsarray Zed accepts; wrappers from replayed history are removed and are not promoted.web_searchis still filtered by the existing Zed rule. The promotion now runs on a detached copy of the raw body before the Responses delegate builds, because that delegate repairs its input: on an unexpanded replay it drops replayedreasoningitems, which slid the current-turn wrapper below the original replay-prefix length and hid its tools. The caller's parsed body is never mutated, and the post-build lift is a no-op.Stream side. Adapter tool deltas are unkeyed, so only one call can be emitted at a time. Starting a second call used to end the first permanently: later deltas for the first were discarded and even its
.donearguments could not repair it, so the client received truncated JSON. Now the oldest open call stays active and every later call keeps its deltas until that call's own terminal event, then replays in order. This covers both function-call arguments and custom-tool input. EOF andresponse.incompleteflush arguments that already arrived and do not copy a full arguments field that no done or completed item confirmed. A completedcompactionitem keeps its ciphertext on thedoneevent with the same retained-budget lease the old parser transferred, and that lease is released if the terminal event is never yielded.Everything this translator retains for the life of a turn is charged to
TranslatorBudget: per-call argument bytes, the optional full arguments string, and the per-item and unscoped text kept to suppress a completed replay. Closing a call releases its bytes, and afinallyblock releases whatever remains when a consumer cancels or a read throws.A completed replay is also deduped per message item, and an
incompleteresponse keepsusagethat the adapter event already forwarded. This replaces #7594, which targeted
